Fritz Overbeck – The Early Works
The persistent fame of the painter Fritz Overbeck began with his move to Worpswede and the first exhibition of the Worpswede artist circle in 1895. The foundation of his artistic career, however, was laid down years before, when Fritz Overbeck studied at the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy and trained as a landscape painter in the master class of Professor Eugen Dücker.
The largely unknown works that were created during this period can now be seen for the first time in a comprehensive exhibition. With their often-surprising motifs, they show a determined young painter in search of his own path which eventually led him to Worpswede.
The exhibition takes place as part of the 2019 anniversary, in which both – Fritz and Hermine Overbeck – celebrate their 150th birthday. A series of special exhibitions focus on different, often largely unknown parts of their work and show the full diversity of their artistic genius.
