Manfred Kiecol – Landscape

27 January — 7 April 2013

The artistic work of Manfred Kiecol (born 1939) has its starting point in Bremen-Nord. Already during his childhood and youth in Blumenthal, he was attracted to drawing near the rivers Weser and Lesum. The flat lines and muted colors of the North German landscape and the river courses with their traces of shipping fascinated him. The early landscape sketches bear witness to Kiecol’s clear vision of the essentials and his intense engagement with nature.

Kiecol studied painting and free graphic arts in Munich and Bremen and has lived in Bremen as a freelance artist since 1973. Numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad, prizes, and scholarships accompany his artistic career. With impressive consistency, he follows his conception of color and form, which soon leads him away from representational drawing into abstraction. Kiecol puts to the test the effect of the finest color nuances. Meticulously he explores gray in all its gradations and drives this differentiated controversy to the limit of monochromatism.

But even as abstraction progresses, the landscape remains a central reference point in Kiecol’s work. Lines appear as horizons and open up the view into the distance, colors reflect the light moods of the North German lowlands. With works from five decades, the exhibition “Manfred Kiecol: Landscape” presents an overview of the impressive development and consistent expansion of the landscape subject in the work of the renowned Bremen artist. The early drawings from Bremen-Nord form a starting point for the understanding of later abstract works. Thus, a new look at landscape painting, but also the complete works of Manfred Kiecols is made possible.
