On the moor
Bernd Pöppelmann (born 1946) is an internationally renowned painter. His realistic depictions of wild animals can be found in private collections, galleries, museums and royal houses worldwide. The Emsdetten Fens in his adopted home of Emsdetten have a special meaning for him.
t is his preferred place of retreat, where he can free his thoughts from the demands of everyday life in the vastness of the landscape and study the highly specialized animal and plant communities. He has recorded the changes to the small area of raised bog caused by renaturation work since the 1980s in numerous drawings and paintings.
With profound knowledge, a stupendous wealth of detail and great empathy, Bernd Pöppelmann shows the beauty and fragility of an endangered ecosystem. In combination with the works of Fritz and Hermine Overbeck, a comprehensive picture of the moor as a unique habitat worthy of protection emerges.
