Attention: Forest!

30 October 2016 — 15 January 2017
Konstantin Déry | Tote Eiche | 2015 | Öl auf Leinwand

The artist couple Alice Stepanek (born 1954 in Berlin) & Steven Maslin (born 1959 in London) form an unusual union: They invariably work together on their often large-format paintings. Their photographic, hyper-realistic style of painting is broken up by disturbing alienation effects, which convey a blurry and uncanny impression of the depicted landscapes.

Konstantin Déry (born 1976 in Budapest), too, remains true to representationalism in his impressively detailed works and never changes to abstraction. However, he develops a very distinct color structure for his subjects and thus goes far beyond the realistic depiction of nature.

The artists share the subject of the forest and the precision and individuality with which they approach it. Their radically modern positions are juxtaposed with works by Fritz and Hermine Overbeck. The confrontation of forest and tree representations for about 120 years opens up a tension that reflects the contradictory relationship between man and nature.
