Birches

Birch trees are among the most important and common motifs in Worpswede painting. Fritz and Hermine Overbeck, too, depicted their striking white trunks time and again in their paintings—sometimes delicate and graceful, sometimes massive and deeply rooted.

Whether a single trunk by the peat canal, groups of several trees at the edge of a field, or straight avenues—birch trees shape the landscape around Worpswede and, with their light-colored trunks, form a charming contrast to the dark Teufelsmoor.

The collection of nearly 100 oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, and drawings—each exploring the birch motif in its own unique way—offers a diverse overview of the full artistic range with which Fritz and Hermine Overbeck paid tribute to this special tree.
