At first glance, fields are not exactly among nature’s most picturesque highlights: rectangular, monotonous expanses stretching to the horizon. Agriculture instead of landscape. Monoculture offers no diversity. Or does it?

Time and again, in changing light and changing seasons, Fritz and Hermine Overbeck painted the fields around Worpswede and Bremen: vast, empty, man-made landscapes under a high sky.
