That, too, is Overbeck! Curiosities and Highlights from the Collection
Seemingly state-of-the-art abstractions, creaky children’s drawings, artistic ex-libris: “this is Overbeck?” some observers will wonder in surprise at the sight of these works. Here, the famous “painter of clouds” from Worpswede presents himself from his unknown side.
But the landscape painter Hermine Overbeck-Rohte too comes up with unexpected subjects: kippers, an abalone, and much more. Many exhibits have never, many hardly before been publicly shown. Thus, this exhibition draws a new picture of the famous painter couple: versatile, humorous, eager to experiment, and always surprising. Complemented by numerous highlights from the collection of the Overbeck Museum, the exhibition invites you to rediscover Fritz and Hermine Overbeck – in all their facets.
The exhibition is also the prelude to the anniversary year 2019, in which both – Fritz and Hermine Overbeck – celebrate their 150th birthday. A series of special exhibitions focus on different, often largely unknown parts of their work and show the full diversity of their artistic creations.
