The B(St)one of Contention – 3 Generations von Harsdorf

26 January — 30 March 2014

The von Harsdorf family is dedicated to art in the third generation. For the first time, all three generations exhibit together now. With great independence, the three artists and family members assert themselves side by side, follow their artistic path, and yet relate to each other. The “(Lithography) B(St)one of Contention” is an instigator, an inspiration, and a starting point for a family business of a special kind.

Jobst von Harsdorf (* 1924), a graphic designer and for many years a professor at the Faculty of the Arts at Bremen University, has made his name, especially with book graphics and lithographies, but watercolor is also one of his artistic means of expression.

His daughter Dorothee von Harsdorf (* 1954) studied fine arts in Stuttgart and now works as an art teacher. Her artistic work draws on a variety of techniques: from painting and drawing to etchings and installations. In doing so, she repeatedly deals with the topic of nature, not least in the context of current events, e.g. stimulated by the events in Fukushima.

Her son Wenzel Stählin (* 1985), in turn, has shifted to the medium of photography. Since 2009, he has studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (the University of Graphics and Book Art) in Leipzig and uses the camera to create experimental image compositions that, among other things, reflect urban spaces and architectures as “urban landscapes”.
