Vastness. Sea. Birches.

13 April — 15 June 2014
Barbara Nowy | Sommer | 2013 | Acryl auf Leinwand

The work of painter Barbara Nowy (born 1943) focuses on the barren beauty of North German nature. Wide horizons sprawl over the fields and the seemingly endless surface of the sea. Here and there, single birch trees stand out. As delicate yet powerful verticals they form a fascinating contrast to the distance that shimmers between them. Brilliantly white, the trunks stand out against the blue of the sky, evoking clarity, growth, and resilience.

By applying the paint pasty with the palette knife, Barbara Nowy reduces the landscape to the essentials. She works out nuances of color and structures, and brings out the abstract in the concrete, always emphasizing the feral and untamable aspects of nature.

Barbara Nowy, born and raised in Bremen, lives as a freelance artist in Berlin these days. Artistic activities and the abundance of subjects on the seaside repeatedly draw her to northern German artists’ colonies such as Ahrenshoop or Schwaan. Her works have been shown in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad.
