At Sight – The North German Realists paint in Bremen

The North German Realists are a group of artists who have met regularly for about 30 years in a slightly changing cast to paint outdoors. They meet in different places in so-called “Symposiums” of several days. Their preferred motifs are mostly North German landscapes and maritime subjects.

In a time when art is dominated by digitalization and abstraction, the North German Realists paint “at sight,” meaning: they paint what they see. As landscape and plein-air painters, they bring a seemingly long lost tradition into our present time and keep developing it, each and every one in their own style. For the first time ever, the artist group came to Bremen, even running two symposiums: one in the North of Bremen and one in the centre.

The paintings created during those two symposiums are on display beginning March the 5th 2023, in an exhibition that combines three museums in Bremen: the Overbeck-Museum, the Hafenmuseum (Harbour Museum) Bremen and the Vegesacker Geschichtenhaus (Vegesack Storytelling House). The Overbeck-Museum presents more than 50 paintings by the North German Realists with motifs of the North of Bremen, juxtaposed with works by Fritz and Hermine, the Vegesacker Geschichtenhaus shows 20 works with motifs from the North of Bremen, and the Hafenmuseum Bremen presents more than 70 paintings with motifs from the Bremen centre.
