Fritz Overbeck – The Etchings
Fritz Overbeck understood himself not only as a painter but also as an etcher, like no other Worpswede artist. His graphic work forms a focal point in his artistry from the very beginning – and yet it is unknown to many today.
As early as 1904, the poet Hans Bethge wrote about the etchings by Fritz Overbeck, noting they were “the most tremendous and passionate in Worpswede. No one has succeeded like him in bringing to the record with such a temperament the ferociously agitated games played by nature, the whistling wind in the moor, the threatening thunderclouds.”
More than 60 large etchings by Fritz Overbeck have been preserved. These are almost exclusively subjects from Worpswede. They show the artist’s high skills, who repeatedly tried out unusual techniques to achieve the desired effect. The detailed, dynamic, and atmospheric works cast their spell over the viewers until today.
