True to nature – Plant Drawings by Hermine Overbeck-Rohte

19 October 2014 — 11 January 2015
Hermine Overbeck-Rohte | Pflanzentafel | um 1914 | Bleistift und Aquarell auf Papier

First and foremost, Hermine Overbeck-Rohte (1869-1937) is known to art lovers mainly as the wife of the Worpswede painter Fritz Overbeck and as a talented landscape and still life painter.

It is almost unknown, however, that she made many plant studies at an advanced age, which were intended to illustrate a botanical guide to the Central German Uplands, which was authored by her son, the botany professor Fritz Theodor Overbeck (1898-1983).

The detailed, delicately colored drawings of scientific precision highlight the artist’s talent for this type of drawing. Here every line reveals her love of nature and eye for detail.
